All There Is To Be Known About Savannah Kittens

By Walter Campbell

There are different hybrid cats. Savannah cats are one example. They retain some features of their parents such as size, and large ears. This breed became popular among breeders in the nineties. They were later to be accepted and registered as a breed in 2001. The first breed was between a male serval and a Siamese domestic cat. This produced the very first savannah kittens of the breed.

Features of crossbred cats greatly determine the features passed on to kittens. A unique feature with them is that they are tall and slim. This gives the illusion of great size. With this illusion in mind one would also expect more on weight. More Serval traits and looks are maintained besides size. Generation lines greatly determine size. Kittens born in the first generation are big. This is influenced by strong genes of the parents.

Other hybrid cats include Bengal and Chausie. First generation lines of the mentioned hybrids have most of Serval looks and so do Savannah cats. The looks disappear with each generation. Females are smaller than males. Their coats are uniquely spotted giving them a distinctive look. The pattern is passed on from the male side. Spots on their bodies are colored with no particular pattern.

The coat colors include marble, snow color, cinnamon color, blue color, rosette color, chocolate and other colors. The earlier breed of kittens played a great role in achieving both the desired and non-desired traits. Ten years after the first breeds, breeders resolved to breed the Savannah cats pairing enabling them get the desired traits.

The retained exotic look is a result of many characteristics that distinguish Servals from other cats. When one is looking to get one there are many things making them to stand out. They include color markings, shape of the nose and eyes and shape of ears. The ears are long, deeply cupped, rounded, and erect. The legs are long as noses are puffy while eyes are hooded. When standing their hind end is often higher than its prominent shoulders.

A slender, tall and long neck also makes them stand out. The back of their necks have light bands that are centrally placed. The band can be followed by grey, black, brown, or dark color. Savannahs have short tails ending in black solid tips. The eyes are all sorts of color from green, brown, gold, to blue. As they age the color changes.

They possess various behavioral traits the most being temperamental in nature. They are very loyal and tend to follow their owners around. They can also be trained to walk on the leash and to fetch. Some have been reported to be very social and friendly with new people. Though others run and hide whenever a new person they have not interacted with is present.

The jumping ability of savannah cats cannot be compared to that of any other felines. Expect to find them on top of cabinets, wardrobes and refrigerators. Feline family is known for its water phobia but these ones are an exception. Their love for water leads them to play with it as well as immersing their bodies fully in it. A unique character with them is that they are always fluffing their tails when meeting a new person.
