What Are Audience Dogs?

By Robin Setser

Have you ever stood in front of a group of people to speak, only to stumble over your words or tense up? What if you're asked to give a presentation that has you on edge, the main reason being that you'll be in front of a group? Whatever the case may be, there exist numerous methods to help people become less on edge. One of the best is the utilization of audience dogs, and these are just a few ways that they can help people.

According to companies such as Assisi Animal Health, audience dogs are trained to help people cope with public speaking fears. After all, there are many people that are scared stiff when it comes to talking in front of large groups of people. Stage fright is common, but it's not like therapeutic methods are nonexistent. In fact, many animal specialists recommend these highly trained creatures for this reason alone.

There are many reasons why audience dogs come recommended, not only on college campuses but in any establishment that entails public speaking. For one, they're able to maintain eye contact, meaning that they will be excellent listeners. It's also worth noting their calm dispositions, as they keep speakers at ease. Sometimes all it takes is relaxation from the crowd for a speaker to not be as on edge.

What many people don't realize is that the relationship between speakers and audience dogs is a symbiotic one. Yes, humans benefit from the attention and calming nature of audience dogs. This doesn't mean that these animals don't benefit. In fact, they enjoy spending time with people. As a result, everyone wins in this situation, regardless of whether these animals are brought to schools, small offices, or what have you.

Hopefully these talking points have given you a better understanding of audience dogs and how they help people. The idea of speaking in front of people is an understandable fear, but it can be quelled in different ways. The utilization of audience dogs tends to be overlooked, which shouldn't be the case. Whether you're a student preparing a speech or a business person drafting a presentation, audience dogs provide the training you need.
