The development of this breed happened at the foot of Mount Katahdin and it is in recognition of this that they were named after the mountain. This purpose was achieved through crossbreeding of sheep that exhibited this trait.

Katahdins grow and gain so much weight. They can also be grouped among the biggest sheep breeds in existence. A properly taken care of ewe can gain a weight of between 125 to 185 pounds. Also, mature rams can be able to achieve a weight of between 180 and 250 pounds. Twins normally weigh 8 pounds on average at the time of birth.

The reproductive life of these animals is very long because they attain puberty very early in their lives. Ewes usually give birth to twins in most cases. However, it is also common to find then giving birth to triplets and quadruplets in some cases. Lamb crop in a well-managed flock to be at 200 percent. Rams exhibit a very high level of aggression in terms of breeding. They also remain fertile all year round.

Each sheep has varying texture and length of hair. They have coats of varying colors with some spotting a combination of various colors. The coat has two layers.
