Origin of the safari cat is when the Geoffroy's Cat was crossed cross with the domestic shorthair. The hybrid is the result called the safari cat. The Geoffroy's cat is a wild cat that is somewhat related to the South American ocelot. Due to the differing number of chromosomal pairs in wild and domesticated cats, it can be a very difficult to have a successful pairing. Breeding was first done in the 1970s.

Another reason why they are difficult to breed is that the male Geoffroy's cat may attack or even kill the domestic shorthair it is paired with, especially for the first generation. Once they do breed successfully, the result, called a safari, which can be called as the world's tallest domestic cat. It is a cat that is both gentle and calm in temperament.

As to date, only about 70 people are registered as owners of this particular breed, owing much to its rarity, with The International Cat Association. Other cats that belong to the exotic classification are the Savannah, Chausi and Bengals, but the Safari is considered as "The Rolls Royce of Exotics". Exotics again is a term given to offspring due to a pairing between a wild parent and a domestic one.

They look very smooth and svelte physically and they do come in many different colors. Color wise, they are unique in that they have different colors depending on the region of the world that they come from. Some will be colored deep orange while some will be black to silvery grey.

Maintenance wise it is not difficult to look after this breed as they are fairly low maintenance. They do not require any additional care or attention. They can be fed normal cat food, but for most owners they will prefer to give them a special diet. This diet is usually a mixed diet that is balanced with raw meat.

This cat is very intelligent and also naturally curious. Due to its wild ancestry it is also very active and highly curious, which can get it into trouble sometimes. This is a cat that is more suited to very active owners.

When it has been properly socialized its temperament can be said to be quite remarkable, and almost like that of the dog. In fact, many will say that this is the feline version of the canine. It is very loyal to the family it stays with and very watchful of others. It can learn simple to complex commands and also suffers pout bouts if left out of activities. With proper nutrition and care it can live to a fairly long 20 years or more.
